West Virginia Hills by Jeff Ellis
West Virginia Hills by Jeff Ellis
Jeff Ellis' song "West Virginia Hills" discusses how as youth many of us can't wait to get out of West Virginia. National media always tells us how great everywhere else is and how bad we have it. I left West Virginia many times in search for adventure and fortune, but no matter how sweet the paradise I found my heart yearned to go back home to those West Virginia hills. This is just a short video of the land the natives love so much. We simply wouldn't trade our natural beauty and blue collar heritage for anything.

Shootout in Matewan, West Virginia, May 19, 1920
Shootout in Matewan, West Virginia, May 19, 1920
A contingent of the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency arrived on the no. 29 morning train with orders to evict families that had been living at the Stone Mountain Coal Camp on the outskirts of town. The detectives carried out several evictions then dined at the Urias Hotel before walking to the depot to catch the five o'clock train back to Bluefield, West Virginia. Matewan Chief of Police Sid Hatfield had decided that enough was enough, and intervened on behalf of the evicted families. Hatfield, a Tug River Valley native, was an adamant supporter of the miners forming the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). Police chief Hatfield intercepted the detectives before they reached the train depot and claimed to have arrest warrants for the detectives from the Mingo County sheriff. Detective Albert Felts then produced his own warrant for the arrest of Sid Hatfield (likely to have been obtained in case the police chief interferred with their lawful duites as could be expected). Upon inspecting it Matewan mayor Cabell Testerman said it was fraudulent. Unbeknownst to the detectives, they had been surrounded by hidding armed miners, who were watching intently. Who actually fired the first shot can not be confirmed. Seven detectives -- including Felts -- died along with four townspeople, including Mayor Testerman whose widow later married Sid Hatfield. (There is speculation from historians that Sid Hatfield himself killed Mayor Testerman in the confusion so that he could marry the ...

West Virginia Dead Teenager Fell From An Airplane, More Airport Security Needed
The recent announcement from authorities that said the body that was found in Milton, Mass. on Nov. 15 likely fell from an aircraft has many people wondering how - during a time of such high airport security - was a teenager able to stow away on an aircraft. On Friday, Distract Attorney William Keating announced that evidence shows that 16-year-old Delvonte Tisdale most likely fell from an airplane that was Boston-bound. With this theory, there are security concerns. The TSA released a statement on Friday evening after Keating's announcement, which said: "TSA will conduct a review based on the information that we have received from law enforcement." Aviation expert, R. John Hansman from MIT, said the announcement about Tisdale is confirmation of what people have been suspecting for a week or so. He said this kind of thing doesn't happen very often, but it is certainly possible. "People have stowed away in the wheel wells before. About three or four times a year someone attempts it somewhere in the world. Almost never is it successful in terms of that they survive. It's because of the high altitudes when you're in cruise flight - you're typically at 30000 feet - you really can't survive without oxygen and the temperatures are extremely cold - like 50 degrees below zero," said Hansman. Many travelers are wondering how Tisdale could have gotten access and stow away on an airplane on the tarmac, especially with all of the attention on pat downs, body scanners and security at ...

Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia Trailer
Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia Trailer
The Wild & Wonderful Whites of West Virginia on DVD is available in stores, on Amazon, Netflix & iTunes. Click to order on DVD: amzn.to Tucked deeply in the hills of the Appalachian Mountains, the White family lives an existence more like something out of the Wild West than modern-day rural America. The legendary family is known as much for their disturbing and excessive ways as they are for their famous mountain tap dancing legacy, which includes living legend Jesco White (star of the PBS documentary Dancing Outlaw). From MTV Studios and executive producers Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine (Jackass), this edgy and often hilarious look into a dying breed of American outcasts exposes the powerful forces of corruption, poverty, and West Virginia's environmentally and culturally devastating coal mining culture. Julien Nitzberg follows the Whites over the course of one year to document their tangled history, intelligently weaving a jaw-dropping portrait of a family that will live on in infamy. From stabbings and attempted murder to drug trafficking and a child custody battle, the Whites run the gamut of 'drama.' Nitzberg brings humor and levity to the White's shocking lifestyle, but he is quick to ground us in their cyclical, brutal reality.

How Pavement "did in" Lollapalooza - West Virginia, 1995
Pavement's performance gets a poor reception — a shower of mud and rocks — on the Charles Town, West Virginia stop of the 1995 Lollapalooza tour. Pavement's Bob Nastanovich and Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg, and Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore, theorize how the performance may have contributed to the eventual demise of the festival.
